Now True Original: ZERO TO MACAO
A Journey from Dreams to Reality
When it comes to documentaries centred around formula racing, many might immediately think of Netflix’s “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” which has captivated audiences with six seasons and over 60 episodes. However, few may know that Hong Kong also has its own documentary on formula racing—”ZERO TO MACAO”, an Original production from Now True, the on-demand service of Now TV. Directed by renowned award-winning British filmmaker Jonathan Finnigan, the film follows Vivian Siu, the first female Formula 4 racer to complete the Macau Grand Prix.
Vivian, a director at an international investment bank, has had a passion for cars since childhood. After the pandemic, she unexpectedly found herself drawn to formula racing. Within just a few months and with no prior racing experience, she took on the daunting challenge of the legendary Guia Circuit in Macao, one of the most dangerous tracks in the world. This documentary provides an intimate look into her extraordinary journey of turning an impossible dream into reality.
Recently, Now TV invited Vivian for an exclusive interview with influential Hong Kong TV critic and YouTuber, @yautaitung. She reflected on the filming process, describing it as a journey of self-healing. Vivian and Finnigan were initially strangers, but a casual conversation between her and a colleague sparked a remarkable connection. After just one coffee chat, Finnigan decided to follow Vivian’s thrilling racing journey, leading to the creation of “ZERO TO MACAO”.
Throughout the filming, which included Finnigan traveling from France to document her progress, Vivian opened up to the camera, revealing her innermost thoughts. She stated, “This experience has been not only a self-healing process but also a significant period of personal growth.”
“All you need is to work hard and be your best self, and that’s enough.”
Having lost her parents at a young age and growing up in a resource-limited environment, Vivian faced immense challenges, including dropping out of high school. Yet, she persevered, returning to New York with a determination to start anew. Eventually, she graduated from Columbia University and entered the world of investment banking. Today, she stands as the first female F4 driver to finish the race at the Macau Grand Prix, transforming the impossible into the possible. Her journey is a testament to her character, determination, and relentless work ethic, proving that the results of hard work can often exceed expectations.
“Now True Original: ZERO TO MACAO” is a compelling story of chasing dreams, offering viewers an inspiring glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman defying the odds in a male-dominated sport.
