On 21 July 1969, at 02:56 UTC, the US astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person
to walk on the moon. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, DW will be
devoting a week of programming to moon-related reports starting from 15 July 2019.
Documentaries to be broadcast by DW during this period include:
Neil Armstrong – The Moon Was His Destiny (19 July). “That’s one small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind!” These now legendary words were uttered by
Neil Armstrong, when he became the first human being to set foot on the Moon.
The film sheds light on the person who was said to have nerves of steel; but whose
public persona
was rather shy and taciturn.
How the Moon Conquered Pop (22 July). Stories about the moon inspired countless
pop songs. This documentary charts how the race to get to the moon and legends associated
with our Earth’s satellite influenced some of the very best works of pop culture.

To grow up between worlds, to find home in a strange place – these themes feature in
the novels of Kim Thúy. She was just 10 years old when she and her family fled from
Vietnam to Canada. Despite this traumatic childhood experience, she prospered in exile –
as an attorney, translator, presenter, writer and restaurant owner. She writes about the
invisible strength of women, but also cookbooks such as “Secrets from my Vietnamese
Kitchen.” Her books have been translated into many languages and in 2018, she was
shortlisted for the Alternative Nobel Prize. We met the fascinating storyteller and
unconditional optimist in Arts.21.

It’s an unparalleled case in trademark law:
the “Bauhaus” brand. It’s estimated that
around 100 companies worldwide trade
under the historic name. The designers
and architects of the Bauhaus school had
failed to protect their concept. Whether
start-up or large corporation – copyrighting
ideas and products is extremely
important for any business and the focus
of entire legal departments. More on the
subject of copyright on Made in Germany.

The enduring desire for beautiful skin and the belief that using a particular cream can halt
the ageing process makes the cosmetic industry a multi-billion dollar business. A steady
stream of new “must-have” products continuously boosts consumption. But creams actually
just make skin look fresher by filling it with moisture. And if too much moisture permeates
the skin, it destroys the natural protective acid mantle. Then there are the numerous
ingredients intended to enhance the shelf-life and efficacy of creams; substances that trigger
allergic reactions in a growing number of women. So what does an optimal skincare
routine look like? And how much cream does our skin really need? Questions answered by
Dr. Yael Adler, one of Germany’s best-known dermatologists, on In Good Shape.

It’s been described by many as “Afrophobia”:
the hostility towards African immigrants
in South Africa. Economic decline
has exacerbated the competition for jobs
and homes in the nation’s cities – leading
to more frequent eruptions of violence in
the townships. But what are the reasons
for this sense of injustice, which has
been further fomented by leading South
African parties in the run-up to the most
recent parliamentary elections? In this
edition of The 77 Percent presenter
Edith Kimani goes in search of answers
in the township of Soweto.
